A Big Band Birthday Celebration • October 29
There’s nothing quite like a great big band at full throttle—and when trumpeter Ryan DeWeese brings his RAD Jazz Orchestra back to Campus JAX on October 29, there’s an extra reason to celebrate: it’s Ryan’s birthday.
A standout voice in Southern California’s jazz and commercial music scene, DeWeese has built a reputation for his powerful trumpet sound, remarkable versatility, and deep love of the big-band tradition. His credits include performances with Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, MONK’estra, the Tom Kubis Big Band and other leading ensembles, while his recording work has included projects for Michael Bublé, Idina Menzel, television and major motion pictures. He is also a familiar presence in the Southern California music community as both a performer and educator.
But the RAD Jazz Orchestra is where Ryan gets to put his own stamp on the music.
Built around an exceptional roster of Los Angeles musicians, the orchestra combines the power, precision and swing of the classic jazz orchestra with the energy and imagination of today’s best large-ensemble writing. Expect soaring brass, explosive ensemble passages, beautifully orchestrated colors, inspired soloists and the kind of dynamic range that can only happen when a full jazz orchestra is firing on all cylinders.
The repertoire draws from the orchestra’s original music and arrangements, with writing associated with Ryan and some of the most creative voices in contemporary big-band jazz. It is music that respects the lineage of Basie, Ellington and the great jazz orchestras while sounding unmistakably alive in the present.
And on October 29, the atmosphere should be especially electric.
Join us at Campus JAX as friends, musicians and jazz lovers gather for an evening of exceptional big-band music—and to celebrate Ryan DeWeese’s birthday the best way possible: with sixteen outstanding musicians, a room built for live music, and a great jazz orchestra swinging hard.
One night. One very big band. One very good reason to celebrate.
